Something Old – Something New
Implementing New Traditions Without Throwing Out the Old
Old, New, Borrowed & Blue
We’ve all heard that age old saying, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” when it comes to a “traditional” American wedding. This fun little saying tells what the traditional wedding should include. You may not realize it, but many parts of the American wedding are rooted deep in old tradition. But now it’s your turn. It’s your turn to decide what traditions you would like to keep and which new traditions you would like to start. In determining new traditions for your unique wedding, it’s important to review the old traditions and why they once were held so dearly.
Do you know the significance of the wedding bouquet? The traditional wedding bouquet served a few purposes. First, the fresh aroma of flowers was there to mask the smell of body odor. Second, the typical bouquet was comprised of strong herbs and spices to ward off any bad luck or poor health. As we have grown as a society through the years, taking regular showers has become the norm. We no longer have a “need” for this old tradition. But perhaps you want to keep the bouquets and put your own unique twist on it?
New Kicks – New Traditions
In thinking of unique ways to keep this old tradition alive, it’s important to note that each old tradition had a significant meaning to it. As you come up with a list of ideas, make sure that they include a meaning to them as well. For example, instead of carrying a bouquet down the aisle, what if you carried a lantern(s) signifying your love as the light on your new life adventure? Too extreme for you? Perhaps tie a set of keys to your bouquet. These keys could represent the turn of your new life together (or even your first home as a married couple!) The possibilities are endless. All it takes is a little creativity and little borrowing of ideas.
So borrow the old traditions while creating something new with them. At the Longbranch Wedding Venue in Cedar Rapids, we are eager to help in the traditions you would like to keep and the new ones you would like to start. Call us at (319) 377-6386 and start brainstorming today.
